St Francis of Assisi
Claim to fame: Francis of Assisi, was an Italian Catholic friar, deacon, and mystic. He founded the men’s Order of Friars Minor, the women’s Order of St. Clare, the Third Order of St. Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land. Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in Christianity.
Quote: “Go out into the towns and preach the word of God. Use words only when necessary.”
Fun fact: In one famous story, Francis preached to hundreds of birds about being thankful to God for their wonderful clothes, for their independence, and for God’s care. The story tells us the birds stood still as he walked among him, only flying off when he said they could leave.
