Spiritual message of the week by David Shehata:
Have you been able to keep your New Year’s resolution so far? If not, you are not alone. Researchers suggest that only 9% of people who make resolutions complete them. Research goes on to show that 23% of people quit their resolution by the end of the first week, and 43% quit by the end of January.
Now that we approach the end of January, it may be a good time to revisit our resolution. Many have vowed to make 2024 the year they get closer to God. This sounds nice…but the big question on most people’s mind is how? And how do I know if I am achieving this goal? Or how I am tracking?
Lets hear from this interview with Pope Shenouda III (extrapolated from his book “return to God”) to answer these questions:
*Q: How do I get close to God this year?*
*Pope Shenouda III:* _In order to get close to God, we must remove the cause of our separation from Him i.e. sin – whether it is old, new, or a beloved habit that has become our lifestyle._
_Use Prayer as the means of returning to God._
_Pour out your heart before God and say to Him: ‘O Lord, I want you. I want to come back to you. Please rescue me from my state and draw me back to you once again. Without you I am nothing. When I lost you, I lost my life. I lost my happiness and delight. My life became without any meaning or interest. I want to come back to you, O Lord…I lost my strength when I went far away from you. Give me some of your strength. Please give me the divine assistance to help me to return to you…take me back and count me among your children. I do not just want you to forgive my sin, I want you to remove from my heart any love of sin, once and for all. I cannot come back to you, if there is any love of sin in my heart. …I come to you with my sin, just as I am. You are the one who can take it from me. If it were within my power to abandon the love of sin, I would have returned to you long ago. Save me from it, so that you can lead me in the procession of your victory_
*Q: How do I know if my prayer is acceptable to God?*
*Pope Shenouda III:* _the person whose prayers are successful is the person whose repentance is sincere._
_St. Isaac The Syrian was right when he said, “Anyone who imagines that there is another way to repentance besides prayer, is deceived by the devils”. Thus by prayer, you gain the strength with which to return to God. So force yourself to pray, rather than to engage in any other spiritual activity. In your prayers, wrestle with God, struggle with Him and talk to Him, even when you are still in the state of sin from which you wish to be saved._
*Q: What if I don’t feel like praying at all? Or when I pray I don’t feel anything? :*
*Pope Shenouda III:* _Even if you dont feel like it, you should still Pray just as you are and say to God, “Forgive me, dear Lord, if I pray without enthusiasm, but I pray out of the emptiness which is in my heart. It is you who gives me enthusiasm and warmth. It is you who pours your heavenly fire into my heart. Accept my prayers as they are, with all their faults. Things never start off perfect, for perfection only comes from you. I am praying, even though it is without any spirit! I believe that you will give me of your Spirit._
*Q: What if I don’t know what to say to God in prayer?*
*Pope Shenouda III:*_Say to God: “I want to feel Your presence, O Lord and I want You to make Yourself known to me. I want to be alone with You and open my heart to You. I want to love You more than anyone else and more than anything else. I am prepared to lose everything for Your sake and I count it all worthless in comparison to finding rest in You and finding my existence in You. (Phil. 3:8)._
_This my child, is the fervour that comes from reconciliation and which turns into love towards God and strengthens your relationship with Him._
May we find ourselves at the end of 2024 among the 9% of people who fulfil their resolutions this year!

يقدم رسالة هذا الأسبوع قدس ابونا David Shehata
هل تمكنت من الالتزام بما قررت القيام به في العام الجديد حتى الآن؟ إذا لم تتمكن من ذلك، فأنت لست وحدك. وجد الباحثون أن 9 % فقط من الأشخاص الذين يتخذون قرارات يلتزمون بها. وتوضح الأبحاث أن 23% من الأشخاص يتخلون عن قراراتهم مع نهاية الأسبوع الأول، و43% يتخلون عنها مع نهاية شهر يناير.
والآن وقد اقتربنا من نهاية شهر يناير، فقد يكون هذا هو الوقت المناسب لإعادة النظر في قراراتنا. لقد تعهد الكثيرمنا بأن يكون عام 2024 هو العام الذي نقترب فيه إلى الله. وهذا يبدو شيء حسن….ولكن السؤال الكبير الذي يدور في أذهان معظم الناس هو كيف؟ وكيف أعرف إذا كنت احقق بالفعل هذا الهدف؟ أو كيف أتابع تطوره؟
ولنسمع من هذا اللقاء مع قداسة البابا شنودة الثالث (مقتبسة من كتابه “العودة إلى الله”) للإجابة على هذه الأسئلة:
*س: كيف أقترب من الله في هذا العام؟
*البابا شنودة الثالث:* – لكي نتقرب من الله لا بد أن نزيل سبب انفصالنا عنه، أي الخطية – سواء كانت قديمة أو جديدة أو عادة محببة أصبحت أسلوب حياة
– استخدم الصلاة كوسيلة للرجوع إلى الله.
– أسكب قلبك أمام الله وقل له: يا رب أنا عاوزك أنت. عاوز ارجعلك. من فضلك أنقذني من حالتي وأرجعني إليك مرة أخرى. بدونك أنا لا شيء. عندما فقدتك، فقدت حياتي. لقد فقدت سعادتي وفرحتي. أصبحت حياتي بلا معنى. عاوز ارجعلك يارب… لقد فقدت قوتي عندما ابتعدت عنك. أعطني بعضًا من قوتك. من فضلك أعطني المعونة الإلهية لتساعدني على الرجوع إليك… استردني وأحسبني بين أبنائك. لا أريدك فقط أن تغفر خطيتي، بل أريدك أن تزيل من قلبي أي حب للخطية، مرة واحدة وإلى الأبد. لا أستطيع الرجوع إليك إن كان في قلبي حب الخطية. …آتي إليك بخطيئتي كما أنا. أنت وحدك تستطيع أن تأخذها مني. لو كان في وسعي أن أترك محبة الخطية لرجعت إليك منذ زمن طويل. أنقذني منها لتقودني في موكب نصرتك_
*س: كيف أعرف أن صلاتي مقبولة عند الله؟*
*البابا شنودة الثالث: * الشخص الذي صلاته ناجحة هو الشخص الذي توبته صادقة.
كان القديس مار إسحق السرياني على حق حين قال: “من يظن أن هناك طريقًا آخر للتوبة غير الصلاة، فهو مخدوع من الشياطين”. لأنه بالصلاة تكتسب القوة التي بها ترجع إلى الله. لذا اغصب نفسك على الصلاة، بدلاً من الانشغال بأي نشاط روحي آخر. في صلواتك، صارع مع الله، جاهد معه وتحدث معه، حتى وإن كنت لا تزال في حالة الخطية التي ترغب في الخلاص منها.
*س: ماذا لو لم أشعر برغبة في الصلاة على الإطلاق؟ أو لو لم اشعر بشيء عندما أصلي؟ :*
*البابا شنودة الثالث:* حتى لو لم تكن لديك رغبة في الصلاة، عليك أن تصلي كما أنت وتقول لله: “سامحني يا رب، لأني أصلي بدون حماس، ولكن أصلي من الفراغ الذي في قلبي”. أنت من تمنحني الحماس والدفء. أنت من تسكب لهيبك السماوي في قلبي. تقبل صلاتي كما هي، بكل عيوبها. الأشياء لا تبدأ أبدًا بشكل مثالي، فالكمال يأتي منك أنت فقط. أنا أصلي، رغم أنها صلاة بلا روح، وأؤمن أنك ستعطيني من روحك.
*س: ماذا لو كنت لا أعرف ماذا أقول لله في الصلاة؟*
*البابا شنودة الثالث: * قل لله: “أريد أن أشعر بحضورك يا رب وأريدك أن تعرفني ذاتك. أريد أن أكون وحدي معك وأفتح قلبي لك. أريد أن أحبك أكثر من أي شخص آخر وأكثر من أي شيء آخر، فأنا مستعد أن أخسر كل شيء من أجلك، بل إني أحسب كل شيء نفاية لأجد الراحة فيك، وأجد وجودي فيك (فيلبي 3: 8).
_هذه يا ابني، هي الصلاة الحارة التي تأتي من المصالحة مع الله والتي تتحول إلى محبة لله وتقوي علاقتك به.
ندعو إلى الله أن نجد أنفسنا في نهاية عام 2024 ضمن ال 9% من الذين يلتزمون بتعهداتهم هذا العام!
