WAITING FOR THE LORDS PROMISE
“And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father”, Acts 1:4
Before the Lord Jesus ascended to heaven, he commanded his Apostles to wait in Jerusalem for the “Promise of the Father” (Acts 1:4). The promise was fulfilled in Acts 1:5, ten days later “you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
The question that comes to mind is, what did the Apostles do while waiting for the Promise of the father? I would imagine the Apostles have now reached their spiritual maturity; all doubt removed, they all have been restored and Christ teachings received, leaving their hearts now ready for the descent of the Holy Spirit.
How did the Apostles live in these ten days while waiting for the fulfillment of the Promise? And how can I live in waiting for the Lord?
Intense Prayer and Spiritual Preparation
The apostles would have been engaging in fervent prayer, seeking communion with God, and preparing their hearts to receive the Holy Spirit. This time was crucial for the apostles to deepen their spiritual connection with God. As we find ourselves awaiting God, we require fervent prayer in vigil and to practice the act of unceasing prayer. I would imagine the Apostles contemplated on the deep love of Christ through their own witness and personal experiences. Every one of the Apostles would have had an enormous personal encounter of the Love of Christ. In our waiting for the Lord, we remind ourselves of the love that Christ has given us personally.
The Apostles where in one Accord
“These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication” Acts 1:14
The apostles came together in unity, supporting one another, and sharing in a communal life of prayer and worship during this challenging period. In our own waiting we too must be in unity with God and people, being reconciled and pleasing to the Lord while partaking regularly in the communal prayers in the Liturgy, Tasbeha, Bible studies and spiritual meetings. The Spirit of God will only work in developing our virtues and spiritual growth when we are in one accord and unity with God and people.
Reflecting on the Teachings of our Lord Jesus
During the period between the Ascension and Pentecost, the apostles would have reflected deeply on the words and actions of our Lord Jesus while he was with them. Living in contemplation as a means of preparing themselves to preach to the whole world the good news.
In our waiting we too are to reflect on the Teachings of our Lord Jesus through the reading of the bible, psalms, spiritual books, reading the sayings and lives of desert Fathers and Saints so we can deepen our knowledge of the love of God.
We pray that the ten days between the feast of Ascension and the feast of Pentecost is a period of spiritual growth in preparation for the Apostles fast and that we may develop our own spiritual practices as we await the coming of the Lord everyday of our lives.

انتظار وعود الله
وَفِيمَا هُوَ مُجْتَمِعٌ مَعَهُمْ أَوْصَاهُمْ أَنْ لاَ يَبْرَحُوا مِنْ أُورُشَلِيمَ، بَلْ يَنْتَظِرُوا «مَوْعِدَ الآبِ الَّذِي سَمِعْتُمُوهُ مِنِّي،” (أع 1: 4).
قبل أن يصعد السيد المسيح إلى السماء، لقد طلب من تلاميذه أن ينتظروا في اورشليم، وفي أع ١: ٥ بعد مرور ١٠ أيام ” وأما أنتم فستعتمدون بالروح القدس ليس بعد هذه الأيام بكثير.”
السؤال الذي يطرح نفسه هو ماذا فعل الرسل وهم منتظرين وعد الأب؟ اعتقد أن الرسل وصولوا الآن إلى النضج الروحي؛ تخلصوا من الشك، قدموا توبة، استلموا تعليم السيد المسيح، وقلوبهم جاهزة لحلول الروح القدس.
كيف عاش الرسل خلال العشرة الأيام هذه وهم منتظرين تحقيق الوعد؟ وكيف أعيش منتظراً للرب؟
الصلاة الحارة والاستعداد الروحي
لابد وأن الرسل كانوا يشتركون في صلاة حارة، يسعون إلى الشركة مع الله، يعدون قلوبهم لاستلام الروح القدس. لقد كان هذا الوقت حرج بالنسبة لهم لتعميق علاقتهم بالله. ونحن ننتظر الرب، نحتاج إلى الصلاة الحارة والسهر وممارسة الصلاة الدائمة، اعتقد أن الرسل كانوا يتأملون في محبة السيد المسيح العميقة من خلال ما شاهدوه بأنفسهم ومن خلال خبراتهم الشخصية. كان لكل واحد من الرسل تقابل شخصي فائق مع محبة المسيح. ففي انتظارنا للرب، نذكر أنفسنا بمحبة المسيح التي أعطاها لنا شخصياً.
الرسل كانوا بنفس واحدة
“هؤلاء كلهم كانوا يواظبون بنفس واحدة على الصلاة والطلبة” أع١: ١٤
كان الرسل متحدون، يسندون بعضهم البعض ويشتركون في حياة الشركة في الصلاة والعبادة خلال هذه الفترة الصعبة. في انتظارنا يجب علينا ان نتحد بالله والناس، أن نتصالح وأن نفرح قلب الله وأن نتناول بانتظام في القداسات، ونتشارك في التسبحة ودراسة الكتاب والاجتماعات الروحية. أن روح الله ستعمل فقط في تنمية فضائلنا وفي نمونا الروحي عندما نكون متفقون ومتحدون مع الله والناس.
التأمل في تعاليم السيد المسيح
في الفترة بين الصعود وحلول الروح القدس، لابد أن الرسل تأملوا بعمق في كلمات وأفعال السيد المسيح عندما كان بينهم. عاشوا في حالة تأمل كوسيلة لإعداد أنفسهم لتبشير العالم كله بالخبر السار.
ونحن أيضاً في انتظارنا، لابد أن نتأمل في تعاليم السيد المسيح من خلال قراءة الكتاب المقدس، والمزامير والكتب الروحية وأقوال الآباء وحياة آباء البرية والقديسين حتى نعمق معرفتنا بمحبة الله.
نصلي أن تكون العشرة أيام التي بين الصعود وحلول الروح القدس فترة نمو روحي في الاستعداد لصوم الآباء الرسل حتى ننمو في ممارستنا الروحية ونحن في انتظار الرب كل يوم من أيام حياتنا.
