St Mary the Ascetic
Claim to fame: St Mary the Ascetic, despite coming from a wealthy Alexandrian family, refused marriage and gave her inheritance to the poor, deciding the monastic life. With permission from her abbess, she became a shut-in inside her cell for 22 years, only receiving provisions through a small window. When the day of her departure drew near, she knew and made preparations to enter paradise. She departed in peace after her life of struggle and asceticism.
Quote: But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. (Matthew 6:6)
Fun fact: She used to fast two days at a time without food, and three days at a time during the Holy Lent.
