St Anthony the Great

Claim to fame: St Anthony was considered the ‘Father of all monks’ as he established the monastic life as we know it today. His fame is largely attributed to his life story documented in the best-selling book, ‘The Life of St Anthony’ written by St Athanasius.

Quote: ‘The fruits of the earth are not brought to perfection immediately, but by time, rain and care; similarly, the fruits of men ripen through ascetic practice, study time, perseverance, self-control and patience.’ – St Anthony the Great

Fun Fact: He was orphaned at the age of 20 and was a wealthy farmer. After visiting a church and hearing the verse, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” (Matt 19:21), he sold all he had and went to live as the first monk.
