Spiritual message of the week by Father David:
Finding Joy and Growth through Lenten Sacrifice
As we enter the season of Lent, we are reminded of the sacrifices that Jesus made for us on the cross. Lent is a time of reorientation towards God and renewal of our vows and loyalty to Him in repentance, as we prepare our hearts for our Lords Crucifixion and Resurrection. Our purpose in lent is to deepen our relationship with Him.
This week we commemorated the martyrdom of one of my favourite saints, St Polycarp the bishop of Smyrna. He was a disciple of St John the beloved. His final conversation with Caesar just before his martyrdom reveals insight into his clarity in the face of trials and temptation. Something we can learn from when we too are faced with daily trials.
When brought before the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and asked to deny Christ or worship Caesar, St Polycarp responded with full courage and clarity saying " For 86 years have I have served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King and my Saviour?"
Caesar replied, “I have wild animals here,”… “I will throw you to them if you do not repent.”
“Call them,” Polycarp replied. “It is unthinkable for me to repent from what is good to turn to what is evil."
During this Lent, in addition to the change in diet, may we choose to give up at least 1 negative habit and really strive and work on picking up at least 1 positive virtue as a form of spiritual discipline. This sacrifice may be difficult, but, like St Polycarp, if we confidently and courageously resist the temptation, our victory in this struggle will bring us closer to God and help us grow in our faith and make us more Christ-like. As we let go of something that may be a distraction or temptation, we create space in our hearts for God to fill.
As we face the challenge of giving up something that may be dear to us, we can learn to rely more fully on God and find joy in His presence.

4. Meet and Greet For Year 1 and 2 Parents – this Sunday 12 March
Dear St Mark Families,
We’re delighted to be back this year with our Sunday school parents meet and greet where you get the opportunity to meet parents from your children’s Sunday school class.
Join us Sunday the 12th of March for our first parents Meet and Greet event for this year for yr 1 & 2 classes in the Arabic Church at 11.15am.

5. Message from the Library
It is the time you are waiting for; the library will hand out all the presents for the summer library competition! Come to the library to get your present on Saturday 25/3 and Sunday 26/3. Please remember to return any overdue books.
6. Kitchen volunteers needed
The Khak (cookies) group would like some help over the next several weeks. If you can spare a couple of hours Monday – Friday between 10am -5pm, or if you are free in the evenings to assist, please contact Nancy Assad on 0414 661 031.

St Marks church offers a wide range of kids activities during the term. This is a great way for your child to build on their skills within the church environment. Please see attached flyer for more details. Please contact services coordinators for more information.

١.الرسالة الروحية الأسبوعية:
يقدم رسالة هذا الأسبوع قدس أبوناديفيد،
البحث عن الفرح والنمو من خلال التضحية في الصوم الكبير
ونحن ندخل موسم الصوم الكبير، نتذكر التضحيات التي قدمها لنا السيد المسيح على الصليب. الصوم الكبير هو وقت إعادة توجيه نحو الله وتجديد نذورنا وولائنا له في التوبة، نجهز فيه قلوبنا لصلب الرب وقيامته. هدفنا في الصوم الكبير هو الدخول إلى العمق في علاقتنا معه.
احتفلنا هذا الأسبوع باستشهاد أحد قديسي المفضلين، القديس بوليكاربوس أسقف سميرنا. كان من تلاميذ القديس يوحنا الحبيب. تكشف محادثته الأخيرة مع قيصر قبل استشهاده عن نظرة ثاقبة لوضوحه في مواجهة التجارب والإغراءات. شيء يمكن أن نتعلم منه عندما نواجه أيضًا إغراءات يومية
عندما تم عرضه أمام الإمبراطور الروماني ماركوس أوريليوس وطلب منه إنكار ايمانه بالسيد المسيح أو عبادة قيصر، رد القديس بوليكاربوس بكل شجاعة ووضوح قائلاً "لقد خدمته طوال ٨٦ عامًا، ولم يخطئ إلى أبداً. كيف يمكنني أن أجدف على ملكي ومخلصي؟ "
أجاب قيصر: "لدي حيوانات برية هنا" … "سألقي بك إليها إذا لم تتب."
أجاب بوليكاربوس: "ات بها". "لا يمكن أن أفكر في أن أتوب عما هو جيد وأتحول إلى الشر".
خلال هذا الصوم الكبير، بالإضافة إلى تغيير النظام الغذائي، فلنختار التخلي عن عادة سلبية واحدة على الأقل ونسعى بالفعل إلى ممارسة فضيلة إيجابية واحدة على الأقل كشكل من أشكال الانضباط الروحي. قد تكون هذه التضحية صعبة، ولكن، مثل القديس بوليكاربوس، إذا قاومنا الإغراء بثقة وشجاعة، فإن انتصارنا في هذا الجهاد سيقربنا من الله ويساعدنا على النمو في إيماننا ويجعلنا أكثر تشبهاً بالسيد المسيح. عندما نتخلى عن شيء يلهينا أو يغرينا، فإننا نخلق مساحة في قلوبنا لكي يملأها الله.
بينما نواجه التحدي المتمثل في التخلي عن شيء عزيز علينا، يمكننا أن نتعلم الاعتماد بشكل أكبر على الله ونجد الفرح في حضوره.
