Spiritual message for this week by Father Augustinos:
Holy Silence
We live in a world that is full of noise, distractions, attachments and emphasis on imagery that occupies the mind and our conscience. We live to speak and have dialog and more often we communicate conversations through text and messaging which occupies our minds and thoughts. It is believed that our mind receives from 5,000 to 40,000 thoughts in a day. We are forever drawn into constant noise even in our minds which can lead to the birth of sins.
During Lent we need to move away from the multiplicity of thought to simplicity of thought directed towards God and toward Christ.
Throughout Lent and in our spiritual life we need to practice Holy Silence, a difficult practice because we don’t like to be alone and we like to be surrounded by some sort of noise, we need to force ourselves to Silence.
Without Silence God disappears in the noise, and this noise becomes all the more obsessive because God is absent. Unless we rediscover Silence, we will never encounter the presence of God.
When we draw ourselves into Holy Silence, as God himself dwells in great silence, we become close to heaven and we allow God to manifest himself to us.
St Isaac the Syrian says "Silence is one of the greatest Ascetical practices which gives birth to stillness which allows us to be in the presence of God and to listen to God as God speaks in Silence of the Heart."
He also says "the highest form of prayer is to stand silently in awe of God."
Silence in the presence of God give compunction for our sins, out if tears of repentance are drawn.
No prophet ever encountered God without withdrawing into Solitude and Silence. Moses, Elijah and John, the Baptist, encountered God in the great silence of the desert along with many desert saintly fathers who escaped to the wilderness, caves and deserts to be in the presence of God in Silence. Our Lord Jesus always retreated to pray in Silence and spent 40 day on the mountain praying and fasting in Silence.
We don’t need to live in the desert or in solitude to encounter God in Silence because the true desert is within us, in our soul. God is already in our soul He needs to be heard away from the worldly noise and distractions in our own homely hermitage of our room.
In the start of the Lent, we are called to enter into a radical life of repentance where we must remove the passions of sin and move to practice Holy silence in our prayer which will foster a continuous life in presence of God opening a door of tranquility and eternal peace moving from glory to glory.
Holy Silence can be practiced in the quiet of the early morning, in late evening, in the church, in the Liturgy we are silent and focused God presence and Him speaking through the Liturgy.
May we be encouraged to practice Holy Silence and to move from the worldly noise and people so to encounter the presence of God in our lives.
2. Weekend Liturgies timetable
Please note the following important guidelines:
1. We encourage you to attend weekday masses when possible and leave Sunday free for others who don’t have any other choice. This will help keep attendance numbers under control and protect the church from any trouble. Your assistance is very much appreciated.
2. Although some rules have been relaxed it is important to remain diligent and avoid crowding. Please pre-order your food and avoid gathering in front of the food booths.
3. During Lent, there is an additional late Sunday mass: 5:30 – 7pm.

4. Prayer Night – Wednesday 7 April
A prayer night with the 7 priests (Arabic/English). Let us pray together and praise the Lord as a whole church on Wednesday 7th April at 7pm.

5. St Wanas Kids Charity (The charity arm of St Mark’s Church)
We have urgent requests from many hospitals in upper Egypt to provide incubators to save lives. Please help if you can.
Each incubator costs $12000. Any donation will help to finally donate 1 incubator.

6. The church needs your help please

11. Bereavement Announcement: 40th Commemoration of beloved Ahsaan Oussa Hanna

We gather in remembrance of Ahsaan Oussa Hanna (30/09/1946 -15/02/2021).
Her husband, Dr Rifaat Gergis Hanna and her children Riley, Anny and Rahmy and her son-in-law Fr Paula Balamon; Grandchildren, Paul, Anthony, Andrew, Mary, James and Annmarie; and her siblings Nabil, George and Afaf wife of late Nabil Samaan and Samy and Mariam in Egypt; invite you to commemorate her 40 day commemoration at the mass at St Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church (72 Wollongong Rd, Arncliffe NSW 2205) on Saturday the 27th of March.

الصمت المقدس
نحن نعيش في عالم ملئ بالضوضاء، والملاهي، والتعلقات والتركيز على خيالات تشغل عقولنا وضمائرنا. نحن نعيش لنتكلم ولنتحاور وكثيراً ما نتواصل ونجري محادثات من خلال الرسائل التي بدورها تشغل عقولنا وأفكارنا. يُعتقد أن عقولنا تتلقى ما يتراوح بين ٥٠٠٠ إلى ٤٠،٠٠٠ فكرة يومياً. نحن ننجذب إلى الأبد إلى ضوضاء مستمرة حتى في عقولنا مما قد يؤدي إلى ولادة الخطية.
في الصوم الكبير نحتاج إلى الابتعاد عن الأفكار المتعددة إلى بساطة الفكر الموجّه إلى الله ونحو السيد المسيح.
خلال الصوم الكبير وفي حياتنا الروحية نحتاج إلى ممارسة الصمت المقدس، وهي ممارسة صعبة لأننا لا نرغب في أن نكون بمفردنا وأن نكون محاطين بنوع من الضوضاء ولكن يجب أن نجبر أنفسنا على الصمت.
بدون الصمت يختفي الله في الضوضاء، وتصير الضوضاء أكثر الحاحاً لأن الله غائب. ما لم نعيد اكتشاف الصمت، لن نعاين ابداً حضور الله.
عندما ننجذب إلى الصمت المقدس، الله نفسه يسكن في صمت شديد، فنحن نقترب إلى السماء ونسمح لله أن يُظهر نفسه لنا.
يقول القديس اسحق السرياني " إن الصمت أحد الممارسات النسكية العظيمة التي تولد السكون الذي يسمح لنا بالوجود في حضرة الله وأن نسمع صوته حيث أن الله يتحدث في صمت قلوبنا"
ويقول أيضاً "أعلى صورة للصلاة هي الوقوف بصمت في مهابة الله". إن الصمت في حضرة الله يعطي الندم على خطايانا، إذا صحبتها دموع التوبة.
لم يسبق أبداً لأي نبي أن عاين الله بدون اللجوء إلى الوحدة والصمت. لقد عاين كل من موسى وإيليا ويوحنا المعمدان الله في صمت الصحراء العظيم مع العديد من الآباء قديسي الصحراء الذين هربوا إلى البرية والكهوف والصحاري ليكونوا في حضرة الله في صمت.
ربنا يسوع المسيح دائماً ما كان يخلو للصلاة في صمت وقضى ٤٠ يوماً على الجبل يصلي ويصوم في صمت.
نحن لا نحتاج أن نعيش في الصحراء وفي وحدة لنعاين الله في صمت لأن الصحراء الحقيقية هي داخلنا في أرواحنا.
الله موجود بالفعل في أرواحنا نحتاج إلى سماعه بعيداً عن ضوضاء العالم والملاهي في قلايتنا المنزلية في غرفتنا.
في بداية الصوم الكبير، نحن مدعوون إلى الدخول في حياة توبة جذرية حيث يجب أن نزيل آلام الخطية ونتحرك نحو ممارسة الصمت المقدس في صلاتنا الذي سيعزز حياة مستمرة في حضرة الله بفتح باب الهدوء والسلام الأبدي ونتحرك من مجد إلى مجد.
يمكن ممارسة الصمت المقدس في هدوء الصباح الباكر، المساء المتأخر، في الكنيسة، في القداس نحن نصمت ونركز على حضور الله وعن كلامه من خلال القداس.
ندعو أن نتشجع لممارسة الصمت المقدس وأن نبتعد عن الضوضاء الدنيوية وعن الناس لنعاين حضور الله في حياتنا.

نحثكم على حضور قداسات أيام الأسبوع إذا امكن، وترك قداسات يومي السبت والأحد لمن ليس لهم هذا الخيار. سيساعد هذا الأمر في الحفاظ على الالتزام بعدد الحضور المسموح به من المصلين، نقدر كثيراً مساعدتكم في هذا الأمر
وعلى الرغم من تخفيف بعض القوانين، الا أن الحرص وتجنب الازدحام أمور لا تزال مهمة. يُرجى وضع طلب الطعام مسبقاً وتجنب الزحمة أمام منافذ الطعام
