Spiritual message of the week by Father Mark:
March is a blessed month in which we commemorate the departure of both Saint Pope Kyrilos VI (March 9) and HH pope Shenouda III (March 17). Two giants of Christianity reminiscent of St Mark and St Athanasius shaping the Coptic Church to play a critical role in enriching the whole Christian world. As we reflect on their impact upon our beautiful Coptic Church, I would like to share with you a journal entry from the late Fr Alexander Schmeman (Orthodox Priest in America) in 1978 after meeting HH Pope Shenouda in Cairo:
“Immersion yesterday and today in a totally unknown (to me) world of Coptic Christianity. Right away I must express my main impression: it is edifying and it is alive…last year in Los Angeles, I met His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, the Patriarch of the Coptic Church. Right away—an impression of genuine life, spiritual openness. And now, in Cairo, I am meeting the very Coptic reality. There are about seven million Copts in Egypt! And this church, despite persecutions (Byzantine, Arab, Turkish), despite the surroundings of Islam, despite its isolation and loneliness, and the whole spiritual and political chaos of the Middle East, is revived and alive!
In the morning, a long reception at the Patriarchs residence. Right away, we talk about the essential—the Church, ways to unify, mission, Africa, youth.
In the evening, I witnessed something truly amazing. In the packed cathedral, seven thousand people listen—as they do every Friday—to the Patriarch. In front of him, on a little table, hundreds of little pieces of paper with questions. He chooses five or six and answers them so simply, and at the same time so deeply (about the meaning of “Lord have mercy”; about the death of a mother—“where is she now?”; about a fifteen-year-old girl—“should she go to a monastery now?”; about somebody who promised to work in the church school if he passed his exam and has not kept his promise, etc.). Then he lectures about the temptations of Christ in the desert, and again—genuine, lively, pastoral, nurturing. Where in the Orthodox world can one see and experience this, a patriarch with the people, in a live dialogue?
But then today I had an extraordinary day: a visit in the desert to three monasteries with an uninterrupted tradition from Anthony the Great, Makarios, etc. In one of them is the sarcophagus of Ephrem of Syria. And the most amazing, of course, is how very much alive it all is: Real monks! In my whole life, I have seen only imitations, only playing at monastic life, false, stylized; and mostly unrestrained idle talk about monasticism and spirituality. And here are they, in a real desert. A real, heroic feat.
So many young monks. No advertisements, no brochures about spirituality. Nobody knows anything about them and they do not mind it. I am simply stunned. I have a thousand questions, and I will have to gradually start sorting it all out. Right now, this trip to the desert remains in my memory as something radiant.”

١.الرسالة الروحية الأسبوعية
يقدم رسالة هذا الأسبوع قدس ابونا مارك
شهر مارس شهر كله بركة، نحتفل فيه بنياحة البابا كيرلس السادس (9 مارس) والبابا شنودة الثالث (17 مارس).
إثنان من عمالقة المسيحية ويذكروننا بالقديس مارمرقس والقديس اثناسيوس اللذان شكلا الكنيسة القبطية حتى تلعب دور حاسم في اثراء العالم المسيحي بأكمله. ونحن نتأمل في تأثيرهما على الكنيسة القبطية الجميلة، اود أن اشارككم جزء من مذكرة المتنيح القس الكسندر سكيمامن (كاهن ارثوذوكسي من امريكا) بعد مقابلته بقداسة البابا شنودة الثالث عام 1978:
"إنغمست بالأمس واليوم في عالم المسيحية القبطية الغير معلوم إطلاقاً (بالنسبة لي). ينبغي علي أن أعبر عن انطباعي الرئيسي؛ فهي مسيحية حية ولها بنيان…. العام الماضي في لوس انجيلوس تقابلت مع قداسة البابا شنودة الثالث، بطريرك الكنيسة القبطية -وبعدها مباشرةً جائني انطباع بحياة صادقة وانفتاح روحي. والآن في القاهرة اتقابل مع الواقع القبطي ذاته. يوجد ما يقرب من 7 مليون قبطي في مصر! وهذه الكنيسة بالرغم من الاضطهادات (البيزنطية، العربية والتركية) وعلى الرغم من انها محاطة بالإسلام، وبالرغم من عزلتها ووحدتها و كل الفوضى الروحية والسياسية التي في الشرق الأوسط فهي منتعشة وحية.
في الصباح، استقبال لوقت طويل بالمقر البابوي، وبعد ذلك حديث عن ما هو هام- الكنيسة، طرق التوحيد، الرسالة، أفريقيا والشباب.
في المساء، شاهدت شيء رائع بالفعل. في الكاتدرائية المزدحمة ، سبعة آلاف من الناس يستمعون- مثل كل جمعة- إلى البطريرك. أمامه على منضدة صغيرة مئات من قطع الورق الصغيرة بها اسئلة. يختار منهم خمس أو ستة ورقات ويجيب عليهم ببساطة وبعمق في نفس الوقت ( عن معنى " يارب ارحم"؛ عن وفاة أم – "أين هي الآن؟" عن فتاة عمرها 15 سنة- "هل تذهب إلى الدير الآن؟"؛ عن شخص وعد بأنه سيعمل في مدرسة الكنيسة إذا نجح في الامتحان ولم يفي بوعده وغيره). ثم تحدث عن تجربة السيد المسيح في الصحراء ومرة ثانية- بأسلوب صادق وحي ورعوي وتربوي. أين في العالم الإرثوذوكسي يمكن للمرء أن يرى ويختبر مثل هذا، بطريرك مع الناس في حوار مباشر؟
ولكن اليوم كان غير عادي، زيارة في الصحراء لثلاثة أديرة لهم تقليد مستمر منذ القديس انطونيوس الكبير والقديس مكاريوس وغيرهم. ويوجد في أحدهم تابوت مار أفرام السرياني. والأمر الأكثر روعة هو بالطبع حيوية كل هذا. رهبان حقيقيون! في حياتي بأكملها لقد رأيت مجرد نقليد، إدعاء الحياة الرهبانية، كاذبة ومنمقة. ومعظمها حديث عاق غير محكوم عن الحياة الرهبانية والروحية. وهم ههنا في صحراء حقيقية. إنجاز حقيقي وبطولي.
العديد من الرهبان الشباب. بدون إعلانات أو كتيبات عن الحياة الروحية. لا أحد يعرف عنهم أي شيء وهم لا يمانعون في ذلك. انا ببساطة مندهش جداً. لدي آلاف من الأسئلة ويجب أن افرزهم تدريجياً. اما الآن، هذه الرحلة إلى الصحراء ستبقى شيء منير في ذاكرتي."
