Spiritual message for this week by Father Augustinos:
The Apostle Paul and his love for our Lord Jesus
During the Apostles fast, one is to reflect on the lives of the Saintly Apostles. One Apostle that we can learn so much about from his Epistles is St Paul.
St Paul suffered many trials and tribulations and had great endurance and gratitude. If we look at St Paul’s description of all his suffering for Christ in 2 Corinthians 11:23-33, we can visualise and imagine what Saint Paul would have looked like:
- in labors more abundant
- in stripes above measure
- in prisons more frequently
- faced death often
- from the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one
- three times I was beaten with rods
- once I was stoned
- three times I was shipwrecked
- a night and a day I have been in the deep
- in journeys often
- in perils of waters
- in perils of robbers
- in perils of my own countrymen
- in perils of the Gentiles
- in perils in the city
- in perils in the wilderness
- in perils in the sea
- in perils among false brethren
- in weariness and toil
- in sleeplessness often
- in hunger and thirst
- in often fasting
- in cold and nakedness
- besides the other things, what comes upon me daily is my deep concern for all the churches.
There is more:
- Given a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet him (2 Corinthians 12:7).
- Abandoned by all his friends while imprisoned (2 Timothy 1:15).
- Despaired even of life (2 Corinthians 1:8).
- No kindred spirit who would be concerned for the welfare of the Philippian church.
The real picture of St Paul
St Paul would have been a very tired person, with many bruises, with teeth missing, with many scars and cuts many infected; with pulled out hair, oily and scruffy hair, with black bruised eyes, with torn old ragged clothes, with a limp and using a stick to walk, with sores full of pus wrapped with old cloths, more likely a slipped disc in his back, he would have been hungry and thirsty, suffering malnutrition, alone, abandoned and in depression at one point.
Why did St Paul endure all these sufferings and tribulations?
It is clear why in Romans 8:35-39.
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written:
“For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”
Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
St Paul experienced a deep intimate love for Christ through his radical conversion to the new St Paul. St Paul’s love for Christ was beyond measure, this was reached through denouncing worldly pleasures, sins, attachments and position fostering a life of simplicity so as to reach the perfect pure loving heart for Christ. In return Christ immersed St Paul with His love, it was a deep love, non-emotional love but steadfast, where by St Paul was mingled and lost in the divine love of God to the point where St Paul experienced on occasions a state of Theoria as he describes it in 2 Corinthians 12:2-4, that he was taken up to Paradise and saw and heard things he could not describe in words, things that man is not permitted to tell.
With this kind of love, nothing can separate us from the love of God, and our tolerance to tribulation, suffering, loneliness and depression will be extremely high. May we struggle to live the life of the deep intimate divine love with God free from all passions and daily purify our hearts so that our Lord Jesus is clear to us and immerse us in His love.

خلال صوم الرسل، يجب أن نتأمل في حياة الرسل القديسين، أحد الرسل الذي يمكننا أن نتعلم الكثير عنه في رسائله هو القديس بولس. عانى القديس بولس الكثير من المحن والضيقات، وكان له قدر كبير من الاحتمال والامتنان. إذا نظرنا إلى وصف القديس بولس لكل معاناته من أجل المسيح في رسالة ٢ كورنثوس ١١: ٢٣-٣٣ يمكننا أن نتصور ونتخيل كيف كان يبدو القديس بولس.

الصورة الحقيقية للقديس بولس
كان القديس بولس شخصًا متعبًا جدًا، ولديه العديد من الكدمات، وأسنان مفقودة، ولديه العديد من الندبات والجروح الملتهبة، مع اقتلاع الشعر، وشعره مدهن ومتسخ، وعيون سوداء مكدومة، وملابس قديمة ممزقة، يعرج ويستخدم العصا في المشي، مع القروح المليئة بالصديد ملفوفة بقطع قماش قديمة، والأرجح أنه كان يعاني من انزلاق في ظهره، كما كان يعاني من الجوع والعطش من سوء التغذية، وحيد، متروك ومكتئب وهنا تبقى نقطة واحدة ..
لماذا احتمل القديس بولس كل هذه الآلام والضيقات؟
تتضح الأسباب في رسالة رومية ٨ :٣٥-٣٩
من سيفصلنا عن محبة المسيح؟ أشدّة ام ضيق ام اضطهاد ام جوع ام عري ام خطر ام سيف؟ كما هو مكتوب:
"من أجلك نمات كل النهار.
قد حسبنا مثل غنم للذبح ".
ولكننا في هذه جميعها يعظم انتصارنا بالذي أحبنا. فأني متيقن أنه لا موت ولا حياة ولا ملائكة ولا رؤساء ولا قوات ولا أمور حاضرة ولا مستقبلة ولا علو ولا عمق ولا خليقة أخرى تقدر أن تفصلنا عن محبة الله التي في المسيح يسوع ربنا."
اختبر القديس بولس حبًا عميقًا وحميمًا للسيد المسيح من خلال تحوله الجذري إلى القديس بولس الجديد. كانن محبة القديس بولس للمسيح فوق الحد، وقد تحقق ذلك من خلال رفض الملذات الدنيوية والخطايا والمتعلقات والمكانة مفضلاً حياة البساطة حتى يصل إلى القلب النقي المحب للمسيح. في المقابل، غمر السيد المسيح القديس بولس بحبه، كان حبًا عميقًا، حب غير انفعالي بل ثابتاً، حيث اختلط القديس بولس وفُقِد في حب الله الإلهي لدرجة أن القديس بولس اختبر في مناسبات حالة من الدهش. كما يصفها في رسالة كورنثوس الثانية 12: 2-4 أنه نُقل إلى الفردوس ورأى وسمع أشياء لم يستطع وصفها بالكلمات، أشياء لا يجوز للإنسان أن ينطق بها.
مع هذا النوع من الحب، لا شيء يمكن أن يفصلنا عن محبة الله وسيكون احتمالنا للضيق والمعاناة والوحدة والاكتئاب عالياً للغاية. نرجو أن نجاهد لنعيش حياة المحبة الإلهية العميقة الحميمة مع الله خالية من كل الأهواء ونطهر قلوبنا يوميًا حتى يكون ربنا يسوع واضحًا لنا ويغمرنا بمحبته.
